Obamas to Plant Vegetable Garden at White House

Michelle Obama will begin digging up a patch of the South Lawn on Friday to plant a vegetable garden, the first at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden in World War II. There will be no beets — the president does not like them — but arugula will make the cut.

Il Giardini della Vittoria, anche chiamato Orti di Guerra, erano orti coltivati in case private o in spazi pubblici cittadini durante la II guerra mondiale per compensare la carenza di prodotti alimentari provocata dallo sforzo bellico. Oltre all'aiuto indiretto all'economia di guerra, questi orti dovevano agire come rinforzo al morale della popolazione civile, i giardinieri in questo modo potevano sentirsi parte dello sforzo bellico, ricompensato dai frutti dello stesso lavoro.   L'anno 2012 ha portato una ventata inaspettata di pessimismo e di crisi nell'economia. Questo è il momento di rispolverare i concetti del passato.

Food and Cooking in Wartime

The Food Administration sponsored a program to educate the people about nutrition and food preservation to help persuade them that eating less would not be harmful. Signs and posters proclaimed, "Food Will Win the War" and pitched what became known as the "Doctrine of the Clean Plate." The National War Garden Commission encouraged Americans to "put the slacker land to use" by growing war gardens and to preserve by canning and drying all the food they could not use while fresh.
